Demonstration Farm research hopes to benefit farmers statewide in years ahead

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The word innovative is quick to be used in modern agriculture, but the expression is on full display through a unique program taking place in northwest Ohio’s Blanchard River Watershed, and rightfully so. Active farms and industry-leading producers are taking on the task of demonstrating new conservation techniques there in hopes of finding practices that water quality practices for future use throughout the watershed and statewide. The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service have teamed up with area farmers to undertake the aptly named Demonstration Farms. Several other federal, state, and local partners are helping out with funding the five-year, $1 million effort.Aaron Heilers was recently named project manager for the demonstration farms.“I was contracted with NRCS and Farm Bureau when they formed that partnership about a year ago. They needed somebody to manage that project and be the liaison between the farmers and the agencies,” Heilers said. “Now we’re moving into the implementation of the practices working with outside companies to put in some of the more untried things out there that look like they can have promising results with nutrient loss. My role is to oversee everything involved with the demonstration farms.”The Blanchard River watershed is located in the northwest portion of the state in parts of Putnam, Hancock, Seneca, Wyandot, Hardin, and Allen counties. The demonstration farms are in Hancock and Hardin counties, where practices on Kellogg Farms in Forest, Kurt Farm in Dunkirk and Stateler Farm in McComb are being put to the test. Each farm offers its own challenges and requires different solutions tailored to the land’s specific needs.“Subsurface placement and nutrients is going to be a big one at the Kellogg Farm. They’re a larger scale operation. They’ve got larger equipment and are more technology driven, so they’ve got a big subsurface placement strip-till unit,” Heilers said.Kellogg Farm will also see work on potential fertilizer savings using different methods, timing, and placements of cover crops. Other potential practices will include controlled traffic, conservation tillage, and proper storage facilities for on-site fertilizer and fuel tanks. An abandoned water well that is located within the crop field also will be removed, according to the Ohio Farm Bureau. The influence of livestock on the land is also being examined in the project. The Stateler Farm includes 208 acres in a corn, soybean, and wheat rotation plus a swine wean-to-finish operation.“They’re looking at soil test levels of phosphorous and then making sure that nutrients are at the agronomic rates they need to be applied at and keeping soil test levels in check where they need to be,” Heilers said.Farm Bureau said the site will focus on managing nutrients associated with modern animal agriculture. Other practices to be considered there are intensive soil testing, drainage water management, tile water treatment systems, paired edge of field testing, alternative cropping rotations, and variable rate nutrient placement. An animal mortality composting facility is also being proposed. The Kurt Farm was recently host to the Hardin County “Agricultural conservation, protecting water: Keeping soil and nutrients” field day. Agriculturalists were able to see first hand the kind of unique practices being put to the test at the demonstration farms.“We’re focusing a lot on edge of field practices there,” Heilers said. “The two-stage ditch, the phosphorous removal bed, looking at a woodchip bioreactor — all trying to capture what’s leaving in the subsurface drainage. And then we’re also going to be doing the drainage water management structures at that farm as well.”Kevin King of the USDA Agricultural Research Service is one of the leading researchers working with the demonstration farms. He detailed exactly what research is being done north of Kenton at the Kurt Farm.“We really talked about the edge of field practices — what are farmers actually doing, what’s the role of agriculture in this whole nutrient movement issue that we have in the state,” King said.He was one of the many speakers at the August field day held at the farm.“Farmers are volunteering their lands for us to come out and put instrumentation in to quantify both the phosphorous and the nitrogen that’s moving across both the surface and the tile drainage,” King said. “There are practices that are directionally correct right now, we know they’re things that we can do — such as the 4R’s, drainage water management, cover crops, reduced or no-till — but what we need to do is quantify the impacts of those and that’s what the Ag Research Service is doing.”King said the research is looking to improve on some already good management practices that we’ve seen implemented statewide.“The preliminary data that we’re collecting so far is exciting from an agricultural standpoint. If we look at the recommendations of a 40% reduction in phosphorus, and so we say 60% is allowed. That 60%, if we divide that across all the acres, is roughly a quarter of a pound an acre,” he said. “We are finding that 60% of the producers we work with are already meeting that level. That’s exciting.“Agriculture by in large is doing a good job. We’ve got another 35% that are on the fringes. There are practices that we can do that we have at our disposal right now that will get us to that 35%. And yes we have some issues out there. They’ve started to scale back on that but it’s going to take time to recover those. I think the message is agriculture wants to be a part of the solution. Agriculture will doThis is a two-stage ditch on display with edge of field monitoring equipment on the Kurt Farm in Dunkirk.what they’re told to do — it just needs to be based on sound science. The edge of field research that we’re conducting will point us in that direction.”Two-stage ditching systems also show promise. King noted that once the water leaves the edge of the field, there are still nutrients associated with it. The ditches themselves can help with cycling those nutrients.“One of the methods that we think we have at our disposal is this idea of a two-stage ditch,” King said. “When this landscape was settled, we channelized ditches to move that water off of site as fast as possible. What we’re understanding now is there are things we can do to slow that water down and maybe put certain vegetation on the benches of those ditches that actually will pull nutrients out,” King said. “There’s a study out of Notre Dame with Jennifer Tank where they’ve actually shown the impact of cover crops and the two-stage ditch concept in pulling nutrients out of the system. Not only are we looking at the edge of field, but we also know that once it leaves the edge of field, we have to be able to do things downstream. The practices such as the two-stage ditches are one of the examples of how we can implement something that can pull nutrients that do escape the edge of the field.”The techniques are in-depth, the man-hours are significant, and the price tag is big, but Heilers said the end game is worth it.“Every farm is different all across Ohio,” Heilers said. “Trying to find that right combination of in-field, edge-of-field, and in-stream practices that every farmer can implement on their operation that’s going to have the biggest impact on water quality is our ultimate goal.”last_img read more

Why women matter

first_imgMatters surrounding women: their safety, their existence, their identity, their prosperity, everything about them is an all-season ever-valid matter of debate and discussion. As much as this intellectual indulgence garners serious attention, there is little change we actually see on ground. Be it reservation for women in legislative bodies or their education or even the food they are provided to eat (or allowed to procure), the matter of women upliftment and gender sensitisation never go out of discourse. The representatives of people in positions of power put the matter of women on the backburner. But in a recent survey conducted extensively for young voters, the safety of women is the paramount issue for first-time voters. With the phenomenal advent of social media and the multitude of information from myriad corners of the country that are brought forth rather easily, awareness among young people of general things is nearly a given. Also Read – A compounding difficultyWhile on one hand, there is patriarchy and all its resultant shortfalls, there is also a considerable section of well-informed and aware youth that realise the gravity of the pervading social malady. The Nirbhaya incident of December 2012 saw a massive public outrage against the precarious state of women in general and the appalling extent of laxity of security for them. The outrageous idea that it is the responsibility of women to safeguard themselves from being violated seems to have lessening takers now. There is growing awareness among young people, both men and women, that a female is an individual before everything else and deserves to be respected because of that. Even before a female is born, a pregnant woman mirrors the society she belongs to, whether conservative, ignorant or poor, or destitute, malnourished, well-fed, well-clothed, well-informed, and well-educated. The increasing awareness of these things will pave the way for a better and safer society for not just women and girls, but healthy and good individuals that will nurture humanity and the values that will bring about a progressive society. It is time we understand and acknowledge that women issues are everyone’s issues. And addressing and resolving these persisting issues will contribute to the well-being of everyone and the society as a whole.last_img read more

The Big Questions We Have About NBA Contenders After The AllStar Break

The Big Questions We Have About NBA Contenders After The AllStar Break

The weeks coming out of the All-Star break typically tell us a lot about the teams we still have lingering questions about. This season, some of those — like the Cleveland Cavaliers — saw so much change so recently that we won’t be able to answer those questions anytime soon. But for everyone else, we’ve seen enough games to know what to look out for over the remaining quarter (or so) of the regular season. Here’s a quick survey of the contenders as they come out of the All-Star break.Toronto RaptorsIt’s time to start talking ourselves into the Raptors, and this season that means talking ourselves into DeMar DeRozan. The standard palette of advanced statistics doesn’t do much to show how this year’s vintage of DeRozan differs from previous ones. His true shooting is about the same as it has been for a few seasons; his usage rate is the same as it’s ever been; his assists are up, but not dramatically so; and even his celebrated improvement from downtown has him shooting the 3-pointer about a percentage point worse than he did two seasons ago, albeit on twice as many attempts. Drill a little deeper, and his points created on drives and the pick-and-roll are steady compared to last season as well, according to Second Spectrum. But if you watch a few Raptors games, the difference slaps you in the head. Yes, he’s working with a bit more space now that he’s shooting more threes and hitting them at a baseline respectable rate. But it’s how DeRozan is handling the added defensive pressure, recognizing the double-team quickly and passing to shooters, that sets this season apart from his others. He is creating 100 points per 100 chances when he drives and kicks to a shooter, according to Second Spectrum. Last season that was 87 points per 100 chances. How different you imagine the Raptors’ chances are this season compared to the past more or less depends on how much you believe DeRozan’s game has grown. It’s a case where improvements picked up by the eye test are borne out by some of the more granular stats, but not in the aggregate. Sometimes that’s a signal to keep an eye out for big overall changes despite relatively few changes to the components; other times, it’s just noise.Minnesota TimberwolvesJimmy Butler played zero minutes in Sunday’s All-Star game, and he didn’t practice on Saturday. NBC Sports Chicago’s Vincent Goodwill reported that a person close to Butler said, “He’s OK, just tired.” This was meant to be encouraging, signaling that Butler isn’t injured. But for one of Tom Thibodeau’s players, it may be something more worrying.Butler is logging 37.3 minutes per game this season, and has averaged 39 minutes since missing four games to injury at the end of January. He covers the league’s third-most miles per game, and does so while creating the sixth-highest “load” — Second Spectrum’s adjusted metric for describing the physical stress of accelerating and decelerating. Butler’s usage and efficiency have held steady since December, when he began to take a larger role and play more to his previous All-NBA form. But if fatigue is enough of a concern to make the Wolves’ star sit out an exhibition game, then, as the season winds down, Butler’s fatigue should be as big a concern to the Timberwolves as the team’s leaden defense. A lot of things go into a solid NBA defense, but effort and energy are high up on the list. And if the Wolves’ best wing defender is low on either, it doesn’t bode well for the team fixing what isn’t working, or maintaining what is.Boston CelticsAfter a great start to the season, the Celtics are reeling. The team has lost nine of its last 15 games and is second in the East, two games back of Toronto. It’s the defense that’s sinking them. With Marcus Smart and Shane Larkin out the past few weeks, Boston’s D has looked downright average. The team’s defensive rating is 107.7 over those last 15 games and 108.7 in the 11 without Smart. Before that 15-game stretch, it had been 102.7. The Celtics still lead the league in defensive efficiency for the season, but the defense without Smart would tie it with the Lakers for 14th. An average defense won’t be enough for Boston, which is also average on the offensive end and has not improved since Smart went down.Houston RocketsEarly on in the season, as the Rockets were adapting to playing with Chris Paul and James Harden — two All-NBA-level guards — in the backcourt, it was popular to observe that the team was better when one was on the court and the other sat. The team was good with both, but exceptional with just one. It would eventually pay off to have one such configuration on the court at all times, the thinking went, even if the main lineup wasn’t as potent. But that’s no longer really the case. When Harden and Paul share the floor, the Rockets score 123.6 points per 100 possessions and give up 110.7, according to NBA WOWY. That difference of 12.9 points per 100 possessions splits the difference between the Harden-only lineups (+8.7 points per 100 possessions) and the Paul-only ones (+16.5). Just as important as how the lineups fall in relationship to each other is how they compare with the rest of the league. The Paul/Harden lineup would be the best in the league and is about in line with the Warriors’ lineups that feature Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Kevin Durant (+12.2). The Rockets may improve further down the stretch, but they’ve already established their star lineup as as asset all on its own, not simply a means to individually successful lineups for Harden and Paul.San Antonio SpursThe Spurs’ season has been held hostage to Kawhi Leonard’s mysterious, lingering quad ailment. On Wednesday, San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said he would be surprised if Leonard returns this season. Leonard has played in a total of nine games this season, the last in mid-January. Still, the Spurs sit in third place in the West and stand a good chance of winning 50 games for the 19th consecutive season. But for that to happen, the team will need to settle in under 21-year-old point guard Dejounte Murray.Murray took over for Tony Parker as starter in late January, and the Spurs have lost seven of 12 games since the change. This is a problem because seven teams are within five games of the Spurs, including the 10th-seed Utah Jazz, who have been on fire since the return of Rudy Gobert. But while the Spurs have dropped some games, Murray has improved rapidly. Before breaking into the starting lineup, Murray was creating just 78 points per 100 chances as a pick-and-roll ballhandler, according to data from Second Spectrum. That’s one of the worst figures in the league for a player tasked with doing it with any frequency. Since taking over, Murray has created 102 points per 100 chances. It’s not as though Murray is suddenly attacking his man like Russell Westbrook does, but he’s moving the ball through the Spurs’ system well and manipulating defenders into positions to help teammates. If that form continues, the Spurs should be able to right the ship — or make it as right as it can be without Leonard.Golden State WarriorsOut to lunch. Back in June.
