Mmmmmmm…pie

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Confession time… I love to bake pies but I hate making crust. If I bring a pie, my little dark secret is that the crust either came from Pillsbury, Marie Callender or Pies from The Heart. Our family loves fresh strawberry, strawberry rhubarb, raspberry and cherry. What’s your favorite? A few years back, Schwans’ Consumer Brands (a.k.a. Mrs. Smith’s) did a pie survey. When asked what are your top three favorite kinds of pie, the 2011 survey said in descending order: apple, pumpkin, chocolate crème, cherry, apple crumb, pecan, lemon meringue, blueberry and peach.Pie has some interesting history. The American Pie Council states that the word pie appeared in the Oxford dictionary in the 14th century, but pie goes back as far as ancient Egyptians. The first pies were often cooked in an inedible “crust” and were primarily just used to hold the filling in as it baked. The first published recipe was for a rye crusted goat cheese and honey pie by the Romans. Early pies in 12th century England were made in “coffyns” that were more crust than pie, were mainly meat pies and often had legs sticking over the edge to use as a handle as well.Fruit pies or pastries first appeared toward the end of 1500s. Early American pies were baked in long narrow pans often referred to as “coffins” as their English ancestors. These coffins were similar to those first pies, in that they often were not eaten. Thank goodness by the American Revolution they decided to rename the coffins, crust! I don’t think that pie would have progressed into the American pop culture and trendy dessert of today if they were still referred to as coffins. Pies have even played major roles in movies such as American Pie, Shane, Blazing Saddles, Waitress and Labor Day. And, you may want to check out my favorite pie scene in a movie — the chocolate pie scene in The Help. The art of pie baking is often passed from generation to generation. No one knows this better than Cindy Kaelber, with Pies from The Heart. She has been baking pies for over 30 years and got her first taste of pie baking with her grandmother. Her grandmother learned when her (mother-in-law) Grandma Millie shared the love with her. Cindy said her grandmother’s pies were fantastic. She made pies at a large Columbus restaurant and later made fresh pies every week for family dinners after church.Cindy has continued to share her art with her own daughter-in-law, Kym, also a partner in Pies from The Heart, and her grandchildren. Cherry pie has a special place in Cindy’s heart because it was the first pie she learned to make in junior high and it was also her Grandfather’s favorite. Her family’s favorite is a brown sugar crème pie she used to make when her family milked Jerseys.Pies from The Heart debuted at Leeds pumpkin farm in 2004. Fan favorites include buckeye, apple and mixed berry along with more than 10 flavors such as key lime and chocolate crème can be special ordered or sampled on fall weekends at the Leeds farm. Pies from The Heart bakes 700 to 800 pies every year.Cindy’s three secrets to pie baking:1. Keep the crust ingredients as cold as possible2. Don’t overmix (and I add a little salt)3. Always use fresh ingredients.Every day, anytime, is a perfect opportunity to enjoy a slice of pie whether you eat it cold, warm, á la mode, breakfast, lunch or dinner. As if we needed more reasons to eat pie, special pie eating occasions occur in February (National Pie month), Jan. 23 (National Pie Day), Feb. 20, (National Cherry Pie Day, of course because of George Washington) or even National Pi () day on March 14. On your next pie holiday be sure to enjoy a slice and share an American icon with a friend, coworker or “hometown hero.”Eat well and healthy!Shelly Cindy & Grandma’s Pie Crust Recipe Pies from the Heart, Cindy Kaelber4 cups flour1 Tbsp. salt2 cups Crisco (when we farmed, I used lard!)1 ½ cups cold water (w ice)1 egg Cut Crisco or lard into flour/salt mixture until pea sized pieces. Mix egg with water (remove the ice). Pour over mixture and mix until dough forms. Don’t over mix. Cindy Crawford’s Strawberry-Rhubarb PieThis recipe, originally from Saveur magazine, is one that supermodel Cindy Crawford makes in her Malibu home all the time…and it’s one of her husband Rande’s favorite things.  2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour1 teaspoon salt2/3 cup vegetable oil6 tablespoons cold milk1 1/4 cups plus 2 teaspoons sugar1/3 cup all-purpose flour1/4 teaspoon nutmeg1/4 teaspoon cinnamon3 cups halved strawberries2 cups thinly sliced rhubarb2 tablespoons butter, cut up2 teaspoons milk  To make crust, preheat oven to 400°. Mix flour and salt. Measure oil and milk together—don’t stir. Add to flour. Make crust on wax paper. To make filling, mix sugar, flour, nutmeg and cinnamon. Add fruit, stirring to coat. Can set aside in fridge and then drain later. Note: If adding blueberry or peach, add lemon zest. Fill crust with filling. Scatter butter. Add top crust. Pinch edges and ventilate the top. Brush with milk. Sprinkle sugar on top. Bake on cookie sheet for 50 minutes. Can cover edge with tinfoil if cooking too fast. Allow to cool 1 hour before serving.  Double-Crust Chicken Pot Pie Southern Living Mama’s Double-Crust Chicken Pot Pie takes a little more time, but it’s definitely worth the wait.  1/2 cup butter2 medium leeks, sliced 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 (14.5-oz.) can chicken broth 3 cups chopped cooked chicken 1 1/2 cups frozen cubed hash browns with onions and peppers 1 cup matchstick carrots 1/3 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. freshly ground pepper 1 (14.1-oz.) package refrigerated piecrusts Vegetable cooking spray  Preheat oven to 375˚. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat; add leeks, and sauté 3 minutes. Sprinkle flour over leeks, and cook, stirring constantly, 3 minutes. Whisk in chicken broth, and bring to a boil, whisking constantly. Remove from heat; stir in chicken and next 5 ingredients.Fit 1 piecrust into a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate; spoon chicken mixture into piecrust. Place remaining piecrust over filling; fold edges under, sealing to bottom crust, and crimp. Cut 4 to 5 slits in top of pie for steam to escape. Place pie on a jelly-roll pan.Bake at 375° on lower oven rack 50 minutes. Coat top of pie with cooking spray, and bake 5 minutes or until filling is bubbly and crust is golden brown. Remove from oven, and let stand 15 minutes. Makes 6-8 servings. Butterscotch Pie Paula Deen 1 1/2 cups brown sugar1/2 cup all-purpose flour1 tablespoon cornstarch1/2 teaspoon salt4 cups milk2 egg yolks, lightly beaten2 tablespoons butter2 teaspoons vanilla extract1 (9-inch) pre-baked pie shell2 Tbsp. butterscotch bits, optional1 cup heavy cream1/4 cup powdered sugar  In a large saucepan over medium heat, add sugar, flour, cornstarch and salt. Avian influenza detected in Alaska

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest State Veterinarian Dr. Tony Forshey is encouraging poultry owners to ensure they are following recommended biosecurity practices after the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that a highly contagious strain of avian influenza was detected in wild birds in Alaska. No other recent cases have been identified in the country.“While this finding is not cause for any immediate concern, it is a good reminder for poultry owners to develop and employ a strong biosecurity program on their farm, regardless of their size or production model,” Forshey said. “This will help them protect their flocks from this influenza as well as other diseases that can affect their birds.”Good biosecurity practices for poultry owners include the following:Monitor flocks for unusual signs of illness such as “snicking” (sneezing,) a 1% or more decrease in egg production, or an increase in mortality. Other signs to look for are wheezing, lethargy, and depression.Practice personal biosecurity and avoid contact with sick/dead poultry or wildlife. If contact occurs, wash your hands with soap and water and change clothing before having any contact with healthy domestic poultry and birds.Keep unauthorized visitors from having contact with poultry, a good practice whether there is a disease threat or not. Authorized persons should be required to wear protective clothing and shoes before entering a commercial poultry house.Avoid contact between your birds and wild birds whenever possible due to the likely migratory nature of this influenza. These virus strains can travel in wild birds without them appearing sick.Clean and disinfect farm vehicles or equipment before moving them on and off your property.Sick birds or unusual bird deaths should also be immediately reported to the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Division of Animal Health at 1-614-728-6220 or through USDA APHIS’s toll-free number at 1-866-536-7593. Additional information on biosecurity from USDA APHIS for backyard flocks can be found at http://healthybirds.aphis.usda.gov or by visiting www.ohioagriculture.gov.The Ohio Department of Agriculture works closely with the state’s poultry producers and USDA APHIS to closely monitor the health of poultry in the state. Detailed plans and protocols are in place to allow for a quick and coordinated response in the event of an avian influenza detection in Ohio.last_img read more

How To Watch President Obama’s 2013 State Of The Union Address Online

first_img5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout john paul titlow 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App Unless you’re Tim Cook, you probably don’t have a front row seat lined up for President Obama’s State of the Union (SOTU) address on Tuesday night. That’s okay though, because the ever-more-interactive speech is best experienced online, where it will be accompanied by more context and conversation than in any other medium. When it comes to tuning in online, this won’t be anything like the Summer Olympics. There will be plenty of free livestreaming options across a variety of devices, as well as any number of social chats, on-camera analyses and interactive features from media outlets, journalists and the White House itself. Livestreaming The State Of The Union AddressThe White House will not only be live-streaming President Obama’s speech Tuesday night, but it will be displaying relevant charts and data in sync with whatever the President happens to be talking about. The White House’s “enhanced livestream” begins at 9pm Eastern Time (6pm Pacific Time) and will be followed by a live panel discussion with policy experts. All of this will be available on the White House’s website, as well as its official iOS and Android apps. If the White House stream freezes up right as your SOTU drinking game is just getting rowdy, you can always jump over to C-SPAN.com, which will be streaming the speech as well. On C-SPAN, you can also compare Obama’s fourth State of the Union with archived addresses from the past. The C-SPAN folks have written transcripts dating back to Franklin Delano Roosevelet and archived videos as far back as Ronald Reagan’s fourth State of the Union address in 1984. For even more historical analysis, check out Al Jazeera’s interactive tool comparing Obama’s past State of the Union speeches. And if all of those options aren’t enough, CNN, Wall Street Journal, YouTube and HuffPost Live will also be live streaming the speech. The State Of The Union Is… InteractiveThese days, it’s pretty much a given that any big news or entertainment event is the “most interactive” instance of that event that’s ever happened. That’s what progress is all about. The State of the Union is no exception, and not just because people are increasingly connected and more prone to live-tweet TV events in general. The famously tech-savvy Obama administration has been proactive about baking interactive elements into the speech and encouraging online participation. On Twitter, the White House has officially endorsed the #SOTU hashtag and is encouraging users to use #WHChat to submit questions to on-air policy experts after Obama’s speech. The administration will also be actively maintaining conversations with citizens on Facebook and Google+. Meanwhile, Republicans will be live-critiquing Obama’s speech on the official GOP website and encouraging rank-and-file conservatives to do the same over various social channels. Media outlets are running their own interactive features during the speech as well. Huffpost Live, for example, will be doing its usual thing, live-streaming the speech and post-speech reactions while inviting viewers to join on-air discussions and live chats.  Tags:#Barack Obama#cord cutters#livestreaming#online video#politics#television center_img Related Posts 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People…last_img read more

Adobe Creative Cloud Subscribers Reach an All Time High

first_imgSubscription based licenses continue to grow in popularity despite initial criticism.Executives at Adobe Systems have stated that subscriptions to the Creative Cloud have reached an all-time high at 1.8 million. With an increase of over 405,000, the first quarter of 2014 has also proven to be the fastest growing quarter for subscribers since the Creative Cloud was released in 2012. The company is also reporting more revenue than ever and expecting an equally successful amount of growth throughout 2014.As stated in 2013, Adobe plans to completely shutdown their perpetual software licenses and move to subscription-only licenses. This news comes at a time when perpetual license software vs. subscription based licensing is battling for the market. In a recent conference call with investors Adobe CFO Mark Garrett stated “We will soon end general availability of CS6 perpetual licensing in the channel. This decision is consistent with our comments last December, when we stated we expected no material revenue from perpetual licensing of CS6 in the second half of fiscal 2014.”Adobe also stated that they plan on launching an exciting new offering to their creative cloud subscribers which should be released later this year. The offering is expected to be “so strong that CS6 will look longer in the tooth” says Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen.Although subscription based downloads seem to make it cheaper and easier for creatives to get the latest software, there has been serious pushback from some in the industry (FCPX and Avid lovers, for instance). But one thing is for sure, If Adobe keeps growing as fast as they are now, Apple and Avid will have to make a significant counteroffer. What do you think about Adobe getting rid of perpetual licenses?Do you like the Creative Cloud? Former Test opener Jamshed banned for ten years over spot-fixing

first_imgLahore, Aug 17 (AFP) Pakistan cricket banned former Test opener Nasir Jamshed for ten years today on multiple charges of spot fixing, wrapping up a 16-month investigation into a wide-ranging scandal that rocked the Pakistan Super League. Jamshed, 28, is the sixth player to be banned following the scandal that tainted the Twenty20 tournament in only its second year, and was described by cricket authorities as its lynchpin. “Today’s decision against Jamshed wraps up the fixing saga and the tribunal has banned him for ten years on multiple charges,” said Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi in footage shared by the PCB on Twitter. Spot-fixing refers to illegal activity in a sport where a specific part of a game is fixed, unlike match-fixing, where the whole result is fixed. Jamshed was first banned for 12 months in December last year after he was found guilty of non-cooperation with the tribunal investigating allegations of spot-fixing. This year, he faced five further charges related to fixing, all of which were proven said Rizvi, who said it was “a matter of sadness that another player has spoiled his career.” Swashbuckling opener Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Nawaz, and Nasir Jamshed have also been given bans of varying lengths. Regarded as a talented left-hander, Jamshed played two Tests, 48 one-day and 18 Twenty20 internationals for Pakistan. He hit three consecutive one-day hundreds against India in 2012. His career nosedived during the 2015 World Cup where he was found overweight and mocked at during fielding, managing just five runs in three matches.advertisement Jamshed and his lawyer Hasan Warraich had rejected the charges.Rizvi said Jamshed will not be allowed to hold any office even after the ban expires. “His name will be put on the list of avoided people,” he said.
