A Nintendo Fan Makes His Own Switch VR Headset

first_imgThe Nintendo Switch is still in its earliest days, so asking when it’ll get a VR peripheral is a tad premature. However, that didn’t stop one clever gamer from fashioning his own Switch VR headset.YouTuber NintenDrew took a Durovis Dive 7 headset and stuck a Nintendo Switch on it. This headset is supposed to be used with tablets, but it works nicely as a makeshift Switch headset.Since there are no 3D games on Switch, NintenDrew had to improvise. He recorded 720p footage from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. Using a workaround to get YouTube videos to run on Switch, he was able to play the Ocarina of Time footage he recorded. He played the same footage side-by-side in order to replicate stereoscopic 3D. Doing this, he was able to simulate the VR experience on Switch. The set up isn’t perfect though. As you can see from the video below, each of the headset’s lenses can only display 500 horizontal pixels. This is because the Switch is larger than most VR headsets. A full 3D image can only be seen in the center of the screen where the two view ports overlap. Because of the Switch’s low resolution, jagged edges become more apparent when using it as a VR device. Will we ever see an official VR peripheral for the Switch? Maybe. In late 2016, Nintendo patented a VR headset that looked like it was made for a Switch. Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima even said that if Nintendo resolves comfort issues associated with prolonged VR usage, that the company would move forward with VR. It’s entirely possible that Nintendo is already testing VR for Switch.Right now, it is uncertain what the future of VR is. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive have pretty much flatlined in sales. The PlayStation VR — the most successful dedicated VR device on the market — has seemingly hit its peak as well. Even if Nintendo does manage to create a capable VR headset for Switch, would there even be a market for it? It’s hard to say, but whatever they come up with (if they are indeed working on a VR headset), it will certainly be better than the company’s infamous Virtual Boy.last_img read more
