Pennsylvania Submits Nominations for Qualified Opportunity Zones to U.S. Department of Treasury

first_img SHARE Email Facebook Twitter Economy,  Infrastructure,  National Issues,  Press Release Harrisburg, PA – Today, Governor Tom Wolf announced that his administration has submitted the commonwealth’s allotted 300 census tracts across the state as Qualified Opportunity Zones, as created by the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) in December 2017. The U.S. Treasury Department is in the process of developing the Opportunity Zones program, and the IRS is expected to provide further information regarding opportunities for investment in zones in the coming months.“After gathering input from individuals and organizations throughout the state and examining where the areas of need intersect with potential investment, I have submitted nominations for Pennsylvania’s Qualified Opportunity Zones,” Governor Wolf said. “We are hopeful this new incentive will bring much-needed investment to many distressed areas across the commonwealth.”Pennsylvania had 1,197 census tracts eligible for Qualified Opportunity Zone status, and was given the opportunity to designate 25 percent, or a maximum 300 low-income community tracts as zones. The list of nominated tracts, additional data, evaluation criteria, and an interactive map can be found at DCED’s Qualified Opportunity Zones website. Final approval from the Department of Treasury is expected in May.The TCJA created the Qualified Opportunity Zones as a tool for promoting long-term investment in low-income communities. Through this program, investors are provided tax benefits for investing capital gains in low-income community census tracts, as well as certain tracts adjacent to low-income tracts. The new tax incentive is for private investors making private equity investments in funds that will then invest in businesses, real estate, and other ventures in low-income communities. The incentive offers deferral, reduction, and potential elimination of certain federal capital gains taxes.U.S. investors currently hold trillions of dollars in unrealized capital gains in stocks and mutual funds alone, making it a potentially significant untapped resource for economic development. Opportunity funds that invest in Qualified Opportunity Zones provide investors the chance to put that money to work rebuilding the nation’s distressed communities. The fund model will enable a broad array of private equity fund managers and investors to pool their resources, increasing the scale of investments going to under-served areas. Family sues Amazon after teen dies after consuming drink purchased on site

first_imgA family in Ohio is currently suing Amazon after their teen son died due to consuming a powdered coffee drink that was purchased through their website.According to the report, 18-year-old Logan Stiner was found unresponsive in his home in 2014 after consuming the drink that was purchased by a friend from Amazon and then given to him.A coroner ruled Stiner’s cause of death as cardiac arrhythmia and seizure from acute caffeine toxicity.Officials say at his time of death, the teen has as much as 23 times the amount of caffeine in his system than a typical coffee or soda drinker. The family says Stiner was using the powdered coffee drink as a pre-workout shake to give him more energy in the gym. While there no one in the case, including Amazon, is denying that the coffee drink is was led to Stiner’s death, neither party can agree on who should be responsible for the marketing and selling of the product to the teen. The teen’s friend has admitted that she found the product through an third party retailer on Amazon’s website and purchased the product of her own volition, but Stiner’s family believes that Amazon should still be held responsible for serving as a platform from which the product was sold.Amazon, however, claims that since the drink was sold by and shipped from a 3rd party retailer, and that all the information on the product came from the third party’s website, that they should not be held responsible for the purchase; especially since under Ohio’s law a supplier is defined as that  which operates under ownership, control and hands-on actions with a product.“Amazon never touched the product, and third parties provided all of the website content and delivered the product directly to the purchaser,” Amazon attorney Joyce Edelman argued in 2019.“The idea that Amazon cannot be a ‘supplier’ because it did not physically touch or take title to the product at issue ignores both the manner in which e-commerce is conduct today and Amazon’s crucial role in recommending the deadly powder,” the Stiner family’s lawyer argued last year. The case has been heard in several different courts which generally made rulings in Amazon’s favor, however, the Ohio Supreme Court plans to hear arguments on Wednesday on whether they should or should not pursue charges against Amazon.Since Stiner’s death, several changes to laws regarding the sell and distribution of powder caffeine have gone into effect. In 2015, former governor John Kasich signed a bill that banned the sale of pure powdered caffeine in Ohio and in 2018, the FDA said supplements consisting of pure or highly concentrated caffeine in powder or liquid forms, often sold in bulk, are ” generally unlawful” when sold directly to the customer.last_img read more

One year anniversary of the slide on Old Fort Road

first_imgSeptember 2019, crews from B.C. Hydro & Arctic Arrow Group worked to remove abandoned Hydro and Telus poles and wire that was damaged during the landslide. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure worked on installing culverts and clearing ditches along Old Fort Road to prevent ponding and flooding. To date, there are still unanswered questions. Late October Westrek Geotechnical said some residents of the Old Fort could return home once the road into the community was finished. In November, some residents would return home after a month’s time away and others were not so lucky. Lives were uprooted from homes built and lived in, people received conflicting information as residents struggled to prepare their homes for the approaching winter after the disarray from the evacuation order. In March 2019. the District says the removal of the stockpiles above the Old Fort was a precautionary measure needed to be taken at the recommendation of professional engineers with the work designed to be completed prior to the spring thaw by Deasan Holdings Ltd.July 2019, FSJ Council awards a slope stability study for the Old Hope Road and MLA Dan Davies wrote a letter to Mike Farnsworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General regarding the state of the Old Fort Slide and concern for the residents of the community.August 2019, in response to the letter Dan Davies sent to the government, the Province shared there was no long term plan to monitor Old Fort Landslide. Farnworth says landslide experts have provided information that shows it is “unlikely” for a dramatic slippage of the remaining hillside, but instead suggests that a slow-moving slide would occur, as experienced before.Following the response from the government, the PRRD Board requests data from the government to back up the Ministry’s claim on Old Fort Landslide. Once that data is provided, the Regional District says they have plans to have the data verified by applicable experts to consider whether evacuation alerts and orders may be removed from the Old Fort area. FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – It has been one year since the slope above the Old Fort slid, causing damage and uncertainty for property owners in the area and still, many questions remain unanswered.Residents woke on Saturday, September 29th, 2018, at some point during that night, part of the Old Fort Hills shifted bringing part of the hill down and blocking the Old Fort Road.At the beginning of the slide and into October, residents were evacuated from the area, Peace River Regional District held meetings as to what to do during this state of emergency.last_img read more
