Daffodil Day fundraisers to spring up across Donegal

first_imgVolunteer teams will be out in force around Donegal today selling bright bunches of daffodils in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. People all over Ireland are being called on to support the charity and help fund crucial care for cancer patients.  The goal this year is to turn Ireland yellow with daffodils, pins and socks all for sale locally.It’s Daffodil Day! Daffodil Day, proudly supported by Boots Ireland, takes place on March 23rd and is a crucial fundraiser in the fight against cancer.Launching Daffodil Day in Donegal were Robert O’Connor, Louise O’Brien, CSO Boots, Ena Barrett, Irish Cancer Society, Helen O Driscoll, Health Promotion and Cancer Screening Advisor and Sharon O’Connell, Cancer survivor and local Night Nurse . Photo Clive WassonFunds raised are vital for supporting cancer patients through local nursing and hospital transportation.Last year 170 nights of nursing care were provided for 45 cancer patients in Donegal. In order to provide services to people affected by cancer, the Irish Cancer Society needs to raise €4m nationally on Daffodil Day this year. A total of 422 journeys were facilitated by volunteer drivers for cancer patients in Donegal last year.Averil Power, Chief Executive, Irish Cancer Society reiterated the need for donations today , “Record numbers are turning to the Irish Cancer Society for crucial care and support. Only two per cent of our funding comes from the State.
