DONEGAL NEEDS DEDICATED DIVISIONAL DRUGS UNIT – McDAID

first_imgCllr James Pat Mc Daid has written to the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald callling for a dedicated Garda Divisional Drugs Unit in Donegal.Cllr James Pat McDaidCllr. McDaid says that while the county has Gardai working in the areas of crime and drugs, there is a real crisis with the increased misuse of substances and this is coupled with a decreased number of Gardai in this county.Cllr.Mc Daid says he understands that Gardai numbers in Donegal have fallen significantly over the past five years with a drop that equates to 16%. He pointed out how the Glenties unit which used to cover the south west area is now based in Milford and that this simply is not acceptible.Cllr McDaid said: “It is imperative that extra Gardai are reinstated to tackle the drugs crisis. Milford is simply too far away to cover areas in the south west and Inishowen. There is lack of manpower in Letterkenny, Inishowen , the Border areas, Killybegs, Ardara, Dungloe, and Gweedore.“There is serious concerns about the supply and abuse of drugs and the reality is that there seems to be no problem in their availability.“The issue must be to track down the people who are pedalling the drugs. Donegal’s large coastline also adds to the problem given the amount of piers and harbours which leaves it more difficult to monitor. “Drugs are destroying the lives of too many young people and families nowadays and I feel very strongly that a designated drug unit must be provided to tackle the problem and meet the needs to minimise drug intake in this county.”DONEGAL NEEDS DEDICATED DIVISIONAL DRUGS UNIT – McDAID was last modified: September 9th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:donegaldrugsGardailast_img read more
