Bundesliga chief admits £37m Arsenal and Liverpool target could leave if price is right

first_img1 Borussia Monchengladbach’s director of sport Max Eberl has admitted midfielder Granit Xhaka could leave the club, if a tempting offer is received. The Swiss midfielder has attracted interest from a host of clubs, with Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Liverpool reportedly among the admirers – but he still has three and a half years left to run on his contract in the Bundesliga. That does not mean he does not have a price, however, with Eberl saying the Foals would be unable to turn down a substantial bid for the 23-year-old.“It depends a bit on our own sporting success, it depends on Granit’s own performances and of course it depends on the figures,” Eberl told WDR 2 radio.“If they reach a certain dimension, then you could get dizzy. There are always situations in which every club would have to make considerations.”Eberl says Gladbach do not have to sell, though, and he hopes a bid does not arrive.“It is all in our own hands,” he said. “As things stand, we are happy to have him with us and hopefully he will stay with us for a long time.”Xhaka has scored three goals in 15 games for the Foals this season and was recently appointed club captain. However, he will miss their next three games due to a red card he picked up in their final fixture of 2015 against Darmstadt. Wasserman to receive star on Walk of Fame

first_imgHOLLYWOOD – Lew Wasserman, the man The New York Times once called “the last of the Hollywood moguls,” will posthumously receive the 2,349th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today. Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, Wasserman’s goddaughter, and Dreamworks SKG co- founder Jeffrey Katzenberg will speak at the late-morning ceremony in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Wasserman’s grandson, Casey Wasserman, will accept the star on his behalf. The younger Wasserman is chairman and chief executive officer of the Wasserman Media Group — a sports management, marketing and content agency — as well as owner of the Los Angeles Avengers Arena Football League team and head of the charitable Wasserman Foundation. Born in Cleveland in 1913, Wasserman was hired in 1936 as the national advertising director of the Music Corporation of America after his wife Edie complained about the way the music booking agency was publicizing bands her husband was booking at the Mayfair Casino in Cleveland. During the decade, he was the agent for such stars as James Stewart, Henry Fonda, Judy Garland and Bette Davis. He was also the first agent for Ronald Reagan and helped him become president of the Screen Actors Guild. “He gave Ronnie some of the best advice in the business,” Reagan’s wife, Nancy, said in 2002, when Wasserman died at the age of 89 from complications of a stroke. In the 1950s, Wasserman oversaw the creation of a television division that would produce such hits as “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”, “Marcus Welby, M.D.” “Miami Vice” and “Murder, She Wrote.” With Jules Stein as chairman and Wasserman as president, MCA became the world’s largest talent agency. However, it was forced by the Justice Department to dissolve the talent agency when it acquired Universal Studios in 1962. MCA then became the first entertainment conglomerate, with movie and television production, a music arm and the Universal Studios theme park. Wasserman’s marketing of “Jaws” in 1975 created the summer movie blockbuster, forever changing movies. Other classic films the studio produced during Wasserman’s tenure included “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial”, “The Sting”, “Back to the Future” and “Animal House.” Wasserman, as a top Democratic Party fundraiser, played a key role in cementing the ties between the entertainment industry and politics. He was also lauded for his charitable efforts, launching the Wasserman Foundation in 1952 and raising funds for the Motion Picture & Television Fund, the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA and Music Center of Los Angeles County. “He was one of the smartest men I ever met and in more than intellectual ways,” former President Bill Clinton said upon learning of Wasserman’s death. “He just came across as someone who understood what life was all about and was pulling for people to have good lives.”160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Bonds would revamp schools

first_imgTwo bond measures that would improve Walnut Valley Unified schools will be on the ballot Tuesday. Fifty-five percent of voters need to approve the $64.6 million Measure S and the $15.2 million Measure Y for the bonds to pass. The money from Measure S would go to upgrading five schools – Maple Hill Elementary, Chaparral Middle School, Diamond Bar High School, Cyrus J. Morris Elementary and Ron Hockwalt Academies – and make safety and technology improvements to the 10 other schools. Some of the upgrades include replacing 25-year-old trailer classrooms with permanent buildings, making classrooms and campuses accessible to handicapped students and repairing roofing. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREGame Center: Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday, 10 a.m.Measure Y funding would go toward upgrading athletic and performing-arts facilities at the schools, including expanding gyms and improving fields, tracks and pools. If the bonds are approved, property tax would increase by $30 annually per $100,000 at a home’s assessed value. According to a Realtor’s estimate, the average assessed value of a home is $600,000, a district official said. In addition the district said they could qualify to receive $25 million in state matching funds for Measure S. “Measures S and Y are critical for the well-being of our students – for modernization of one-third of our schools, for 21st century technology tools for teachers and students, for safe, secure high-quality learning environments. It is all about the kids,” said Carolyn Elfelt, school board president, in an e-mail. Walnut Valley voters have supported two previous $50 million bond measures – in 1991 and 2000 – for school improvements. Board member Larry Redinger said that increasing construction costs are why the proposed bonds are higher than previous years. “We have been a great district, and we have to maintain good facilities to attract teachers,” Redinger said. Redinger is optimistic that the bonds will be approved because of the support from the community. In the last year, several school districts have passed bond measures earmarked for facilities improvements. In June 2006, Rowland, Covina-Valley and Monrovia unified passed school bond measures. Rowland Unified had the largest bond – $118 million – that passed with more than 70 percent of the vote. caroline.an@sgvn.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2108 www.insidesocal.com/schools160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Google offers $10 million in prizes to help develop software

first_imgGoogle Inc. is offering $10 million in prizes for people who build the best software to enhance its upcoming cell-phone operating system. The Mountain View-based company is developing a free cell-phone software package that it says will make it easier to surf the Web over mobile devices. It also will give Google more opportunities to sell ads and services. The operating system will be based on computer code that can be openly distributed among programmers, which Google hopes will encourage developers to create new software and improvements that could spawn new uses for smart phones. Winning offerings could encompass simple aesthetic improvements such as personalized home screens or more complicated social-networking programs that merge data from the Web – such as maps or personal Web pages – with data from users’ phones – such as contact information or the phones’ geographic locations. Android will compete with mobile operating systems made by Microsoft Corp., Palm Inc., Research In Motion Ltd., and Symbian, which is owned by Nokia Corp. and several other major phone makers.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
