The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) and the FBI are searching for a murder suspect, who fatally shot a BPD homicide detective in the head Nov. 15. Baltimore Police announced this afternoon, Det. Sean Suiter, 43, who had been in grave condition overnight, has died from his injuries.Det. Sean Suiter, an 18-year veteran of the Baltimore Police Department, was shot in the head while investigating a murder in West Baltimore, Nov. 15. He died from his injuries about 24 hours after the shooting. (Courtesy photo)Suiter, an 18-year veteran of the force was a father of five, according to Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis. The police commissioner described Suiter’s assailant as, “a heartless, ruthless, soulless killer.”The manhunt for the murder suspect has encompassed a wide swath of the West Baltimore community of Harlem Park, which has been on a so-called shelter-in-place lockdown. Police cars and crime scene tape have cordoned off several blocks. The fatal shooting took place around 4:30 p.m., Nov. 15, in the 900 block of Bennett Avenue in West Baltimore, a neighborhood with a history of violence and homicide. According to police, Suiter was doing a follow up investigation to a homicide he had been working on, when he noticed a man engaged in “suspicious behavior.”“The detective approached the man, brief conversation took place, and the detective was shot in the head,” said Commissioner Kevin Davis at a press conference shortly after the shooting.Police say another officer, working in the same area, loaded the injured officer into a cruiser and started driving towards Shock Trauma, but an ambulance intercepted them and transferred Suiter to Shock Trauma.Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh and Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby extended their prayers to Suiter’s family following the fatal shooting. “First let me ask that we just pray for the family…and let me just take a moment to remind us how dangerous our streets are at this time,” said Pugh. “We cannot have violent criminals running our streets. Too many guns on our streets…too many victims. When anyone is hurt in this city my phone rings. Everyone in each neighborhood deserves to be safe…I will be talking to the governor, we need to get control of violence in this city,” Pugh added.“This is the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve our city. We will do our part to ensure that this perpetrator of this offense is brought to justice,” said Mosby the night of the shooting. “He deserved to come home tonight and because of the act of cowardice, he’s not.”The FBI, and the ATF are assisting Baltimore Police in the search for the suspect who is still at large, in part, by offering a $64,000 reward for any information leading to the capture of the suspect. The suspect is described as a Black male, wearing a black hoodie with a silver stripe down the back.Authorities are asking anyone with any information to text tips to 443-902-4824, call 1-866-7LOCKUP, or call Detectives at 410-396-2100.
By DAVID McFADDEN, Associated PressBALTIMORE (AP) — The most veteran member of a deeply corrupt Baltimore police unit was sentenced Friday to 18 years, becoming the sixth member of the disbanded squad to head to federal prison.U.S. District Judge Catherine Blake handed down the punishment to former Gun Trace Task Force member Daniel Hersl, who had a reputation as a dirty officer stretching back years. The 48-year-old was the oldest member of the disbanded unit. This undated file photo provided by the Baltimore Police Department shows Detective Daniel Hersl. The veteran police officer who was a member of a deeply corrupt Baltimore squad faces sentencing Friday, June 22, 2018, a few months after a jury found him guilty of racketeering and robbery. (Baltimore Police Department via AP, File)Wearing a red jail jumpsuit, Hersl shrugged in resignation as he was led out of the courtroom in front of a gallery holding about a dozen supporters. One relative called out, “We love you, Danny” as he was escorted away.Federal prosecutor Leo Wise asserted that the ex-detective “devalued” people he dealt with as a city law enforcer and “abused his power to prey on them.” He said he also ripped off taxpayers by committing rampant overtime fraud, including an entire month that he spent refurbishing his house while on the force’s clock.A federal jury had found him guilty of racketeering and robbery earlier this year. Hersl had sought a new trial early Friday, but Blake rejected the request. His defense attorney, William Purpura, never denied that his client took money but argued that it didn’t rise to charges of robbery or extortion.Outside the courthouse, Purpura told reporters he will file an appeal. He has 14 days to do so.Three of Hersl’s siblings spoke on his behalf before he was sentenced, leading their younger brother to dab his eyes with tissues. Purpura read one 2017 letter Hersl wrote to his family from jail saying he was being transferred to his fourth lockup in eight months because some inmates had hatched a plan to choke him with shoelaces.Hersl was one of eight indicted members of the once-lauded Gun Trace Task Force, which was tasked with getting illegal guns off the streets of a city plagued by violent crime. He had pleaded not guilty to racketeering and robbery charges along with another officer, Marcus Taylor.During their trial, jurors heard nearly three weeks of testimony from drug dealers, a crooked bail bondsman and four disgraced task force colleagues who detailed astonishing levels of misconduct.Evidence included a call recorded by the FBI that captured several of the detectives’ voices during and after a chaotic high-speed chase was set into motion when unit supervisor Sgt. Wayne Jenkins tried to stop a car he suspected of having some kind of contraband worth looting. After the chase resulted in a two-car wreck, officers could be heard telling each other that Jenkins didn’t want anybody to “call it in” or get involved in providing help. When discussing what kind of response they could feasibly have if they get linked to the accident, Hersl could be heard saying: “Hey, I was in this car, just driving home.” He then chuckles. On Friday, Wise told Blake that this recording “gave a very chilling sense of how (Hersl) viewed himself and how he viewed the community he was supposed to serve.”Wise asked for a 20-year prison sentence. Blake imposed 18, the same total number of years that Taylor received. The six other indicted task force members all pleaded guilty in the federal investigation. Four of them testified as witnesses for the government during the trial for Hersl and Taylor. Now that Hersl has been sentenced, only two disgraced members of the rogue unit have yet to receive their punishments. Ex-detectives Jemell Rayam and Momodu Gondo, who have both cooperated with the government, don’t have sentencing dates set yet and there’s speculation that U.S. prosecutors intend to continue using their testimony moving forward.Scores of cases involving the officers have already been dropped and many fear numerous hardened criminals will go free. Wise said that while innocent victims have been cleared now that the corrupt unit has been exposed, he believes that “far great numbers” of “armed violent offenders will be released” due to their corrupt actions.___Follow McFadden on Twitter: https://twitter.com/dmcfadd1
By Mark F. Gray, AFRO Staff Writer, email@example.comThe Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) did not find sufficient evidence to file federal hate crime charges against former University of Maryland student Sean Urbanski, in the suspected 2017 murder of U.S. Army Lieutenant Richard Collins III in College Park according to broadcast reports. In a story that was first reported by WTOP-FM, the FBI’s investigation couldn’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt that hate motivated Urbanski, who is White, to kill Collins, who is Black. Despite the discovery of racist cartoons and posts that were found on a since deleted White supremacist Facebook group page, the Bureau’s investigators didn’t find enough evidence through forensic testing, digital investigation and interviews to prove it.Despite information proving he belonged to a White supremacist Facebook group, the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not find sufficient evidence to file federal hate crime charges against former University of Maryland student Sean Urbanski, in the alleged 2017 murder of U.S. Army Lieutenant Richard Collins III in College Park. (Courtesy Photo)Collins was a student at Bowie State who was leaving a visit with his friends on the University of Maryland’s College Park campus when he was killed on May 20, 2017. He was stabbed while he and two others were waiting for an Uber ride at a nearby bus stop. It became an emotional time on both campuses because Collins died just days before his graduation, after he was commissioned as a U.S. Army second lieutenant.Urbanski still faces state charges in Maryland for first-degree murder and committing a hate crime that resulted in death. The maximum penalty in Maryland for first-degree murder is life in prison with no chance of parole. There is also an additional 20-year sentence for a state hate crime conviction.Defense attorneys began laying the foundation for Urbanski’s defense when he first appeared in court on May 22, 2017. Their argument has been that Urbanksi was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident and his impaired judgement made it difficult for him to meet the intent required for a first-degree murder conviction. One defense motion seeks to dismiss the hate crime on the basis of the First Amendment, while another requests the judge sever the hate crime from the murder count.Reports say there is surveillance video which captured the killing. In addition, Urbanski’s blood alcohol content proves he was legally drunk.“Alcohol and substance abuse may have played a significant role in all of this,” his co-counsel William Brennan reportedly told the court during that first appearance.Under Maryland law, first-degree murder is a deliberate, premeditated and willful killing. WTOP reported prosecutors have remained firm on the first-degree murder count, despite offers by Urbanski’s lawyers that he would plead guilty to second-degree murder. Second degree murder carries a minimum sentence of 30 years.Urbanski could avoid trial by pleading guilty to first-degree murder, although both sides could make their cases for an appropriate sentence, during that phase before a judge. State and federal prosecutors have not said whether Urbanski would face additional federal hate charges that could make a defendant eligible for execution. The trial has been delayed three times, but is now scheduled to begin July 22. Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks was initially the lead prosecutor in the case when she was the County’s State’s Attorney. Alsobrooks, who was been replaced by newly elected Aisha Braveboy, previously said, “the defendant purposefully chose to stab Mr. Collins, over anyone else at the bus stop that night, because Mr. Collins is an African American.”Advocates for the Collins family have insisted that the ongoing delays with the legal proceedings are an emotional detriment to them making it difficult to overcome this tragedy. “The family of the victim has been and continues to be severely impacted by this crime,” wrote Pauline Mandel, of the Maryland Crime Victim’s Resource Center, on behalf of Richard and Dawn Collins, the victim’s parents in November 2017.

Louisville jumped on the Demon Deacons early on Friday, scoring four times in the first two innings. Danny Oriente hammered a double that short-hopped the left-centerfield wall to plate a pair of runs in the first and Tyler Fitzgerald tucked a ball inside the first base bag for a two-run triple in the second. Louisville (21-6, 8-3 ACC) won 6-1 in the opener behind another strong performance from Reid Detmers, and followed it up with a 10-7 come-from-behind victory in the nightcap. ACC Network Extra LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 10th-ranked Louisville baseball team swept a doubleheader and clinched the weekend series on Friday against Wake Forest at Jim Patterson Stadium. PDF Box Score (Game One) Like in game one, all nine starters reached base in the second game with seven coming around to score at least one run. The second game of Friday’s doubleheader started in reverse fashion, with Wake Forest scoring the first four runs of the game. The Demon Deacons plated four on five hits in the third inning to put UofL in a hole. The Cardinals kept chipping away at the deficit, with Jared Poland making it a one-run game with a run-scoring single in the sixth. Louisville finally busted through for good in the seventh, taking control with a five-run frame. The sophomore retired the first 10 batters he faced on Friday, before running into the only trouble he faced all day.Wake Forest (15-13, 5-6) collected three straight hits to score their only run of the game in the fourth, but Detmers buckled down to retire 11 of the next 12 batters he faced. He exited after a pair of hits in the eighth, but Michael McAvene quickly cleaned it up getting a double play on his second pitch out of the bullpen. The Cardinals added two more runs on singles from Henry Davis and Justin Lavey as insurance in the bottom half of the eighth before McAvene finished things off for his second save of the year. Facebook has scrapped plans to unveil a smart speaker with video chat capabilities at its f8 developer conference in early May, according to a Bloomberg report. The change of plans comes in light of the recent privacy backlash, which reportedly also prompted the company to revisit some privacy safeguards for the project.Facebook had reportedly been working on a smart speaker that doubles as a video chat device, similar to Amazon’s Echo Show, for some time. The company has yet to publicly acknowledge its plans for such a project, but was set to unveil it at its f8 event on May 1 before making it commercially available towards the end of the year, according to Bloomberg. The device is likely going to mimic some of the functionality of existing smart speakers, which monitor their environment for so-called hot-words like “Okay Google” or “Alexa.” Upon hearing it, they kick into high gear and transmit audio to the cloud to answer questions, deliver personalized news, music and more. In addition to this fairly standard set of features, Facebook’s device reportedly also makes use of facial recognition to easily let users initiate video calls with their contacts. However, the outfall over the Cambridge Analytica data scandal would likely not have provided the best context for the introduction of a device capable of voice and video recognition. In fact, the company is now rethinking how to handle some of the data gathered by the device, The Information reported Wednesday. Instead of uploading facial recognition data to the cloud, it might process it locally on the device itself — an approach that mirrors the way Apple uses biometric data to unlock the iPhone X.Facebook didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Popular on Variety The collaboration between the two companies began in earnest in January, and resulted among other things in a few 360-degree videos for Saturday Night Live, featuring stars like Natalie Portman, Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. On Monday, the broadcaster released two new videos featuring Bravo reality TV star Lisa Vanderpump and the cast of “Vanderpump Rules.”These videos were produced with Jump, Google’s 360-degree video capture and production platform. Jump automatically combines the individual videos of a 17-camera video rig in the cloud, doing away with the need for any manual stitching in the production process.NBCUniversal also recently began to shoot videos in VR180, a relatively new format spearheaded by YouTube that combines 180-degree video with 3D when watched with a compatible VR headset. In addition to these VR productions, NBCUniversal is also exploring producing augmented reality (AR) content in partnership with Google, Variety has learned from a source familiar with the deal. Google announced its mobile AR technology ARCore last summer, and began making it available to hundreds of millions of Android phones in February. Adding AR to the mix could help NBCUniversal reach much bigger audiences and revenue potential.Said Lamprecht: “We look forward to working with Google and YouTube on more collaborations like this in the future.” ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Running on a Treadmill1/7The Flash can travel through time, which isn’t weird in and of itself for a DC character, but one of the methods that The Flash uses to travel through time is incredibly weird just because it still pops up in the DC comics universe from time to time. That device is called the Cosmic Treadmill and it is just what it says it is: a somehow magical treadmill that lets the user run fast enough to travel through time. It notably allowed Professor Zoom to come back from the future and when Flash killed Zoom pre-Crisis he used the Cosmic Treadmill to run to the future and marry a 30th Century version of Iris West. The Flash had run through time before the Cosmic Treadmill was introduced and – as we’ve seen on T.V. – the character can still mess with time without a Treadmill. So how is this Cosmic Treadmill still getting trotted out by speedsters to run through time?<><> Things in the DC universe are about to get all up in the Speed Force one way or another. The CW show The Flash starring Grant Gustin as Barry Allen premieres on October 4th with an episode called “Flashpoint” and the Ezra Miller DC Cinematic Barry Allen debuted this year with brief cameos in Batman V. Being fast and tapping into a fictional energy dimension called The Speed Force (the less we need to talk about it, the better) manifests itself in some weird ways. Here are the weirdest.
